In her early life, she endured numerous harsh realities as her father struggled with addiction, delt with her parent’s marital issues at the age of 14, and struggled with crippling headaches (Caruso 2025, Early Life).
When Rihanna was a teenager, she transformed her troubling obstacles into singing, as a form of escape. With her two friends, they had composed a girl-group and managed to succeed an audition with the music producer, Evan Rogers (Caruso 2025, Early Life). However, Rogers was more inclined with Rihanna as he was stunned with her performance. Less than a year later, Rihanna left with Rogers and his wife to America at only 16 years old (Caruso, 2025, Early Life).
Rogers and Rihanna obtained an audition with Def Jam Records, whose president is the profound and legendary rapper, Jay-Z. Once Rihanna performed her song, Jay-Z was amazed and signed her on the spot (Caruso, 2025, Music Career).
Eight months into her career, Rihanna released her first single “Pon de Replay,” a reggae, club track that gained popularity, which had hit No. 2 on Billboards singles chart (Caruso, 2025, Music Career). Announced as an upcoming global pop-star, she released her first album Music of the Sun, which reached No. 10 on Billboards albums chart (Caruso, 2025, Music Career). A year later, she landed her first No.1 single, “SOS.”

It is not definitive when she’ll return to the music industry.

What Role as a Performer does Rihanna Serve?
Rihanna provides such complexity and versatility in the industry. Numerous (or even all) of her music became one of many voices that represents and dominates America and the world. In fact, 14 had hit No. 1, and 31 placed in the top 10s (Gathright, 2018, para. 5).
Rihanna does not constrain herself to one specific genre. Taking risks, she transformed the industry by shaping the texture and taking the challenges of the multitudes of genre, music offers: rock, dance, trap, dubstep (Gathright, 2018, para. 6). Numerous artists stick to one; however, Rihanna expanded her musicality expertise, where she demonstrated her uniqueness in the competitive industry.
Beyond as an artist, she is an exceptional performer by utilizing such complex abilities to express her emotions, within the songs. Expressing emotions requires authenticity, and she effectively and successfully communicated her feelings and the messages the song provides. It should not be a surprise of how well-loved she is, internationally.
Rihanna does not compose her music, though, her portrayal and expression provides individuality and uniqueness. Her voice is distinct and recognizable, as it is quite raspy, raw, and deep. Her voice complements the uniqueness and versatility the industry offers.
However, Rihanna had stopped performing and curating music, causing uproar worldwide. This should already explain the profound impact she had left behind. It wasn’t until 2023; she performed at the Superbowl. After her hiatus of 5 years, the performance became the most watched of all time, attracting the staggering amount of 121 million viewers (Mamo, 2023, para. 2).
Rihanna left an everlasting impact in the industry. It is quite difficult to challenge her accomplishment as an artist.

Opinion, Musical Elements, and Conclusion
Opinion:
Composers are able to create amazing music that dominates the industry, globally. Composers are also quite versatile, by being able to curate music that fits the artist. However, artists such as Rihanna, are able to convey the emotions that the song provides. In fact, Rihanna is able to convey and interprets her own twist, offering individuality to the song and herself as an artist. It is quite inspiring to hear and witness the performance Rihanna exemplifies. As a woman, minority, and immigrant, she defied the competitive atmosphere in the industry, establishing her place as a global star.
Musical Elements:
In “Pon de Replay,” it had provided uniqueness in the industry, as it was a reggae, club-dance track. Rihanna as a performer doesn’t only sing the song; she provides individuality and expression. The song is quite groovy, encouraging others to move and dance with great charisma. We could describe the tempo as fast and energetic, that creates this party-like ambiance. I mentioned how Rihanna’s voice is distinct, so the texture her voice exemplifies is quite recognizable. It is raspy and deep, providing character to some lyrics:
“All the gyal pon the dance floor wantin’ some more what.”
Her accent and raspy voice accentuates the lyrics, adding clarity and distinctiveness that many other artists cannot replicate.
Whereas, her hit song that granted her a win at the Grammy Awards, “Umbrella,” is different than “Pon de Replay.” While “Pon de Replay” is a groovy, dance-feel song, “Umbrella” leans toward in the emotional side, showcasing the versatility Rihanna offers. The tempo is a bit slower to complement the emotional tone, emphasized in the song. The dynamics within her voice gradually softens to accentuate the gentle romance, but deepens as we hit the pre-chorus and chorus. This conveys the confidence and power the song exemplifies, that pours the love and feelings. As for timbre, it changes as the song progresses: warm, rich, deep, raspy. The versatility is evident, providing depth and expressing a multitude of emotions.
Conclusion:
Rihanna’s music is diverse, offering substantial differences in each track. Her music and voice are a breath of fresh air, as we are delved into a plethora of versatility. It is not repetitive and dull, and being able to experiment with different genres did not taint her reputation. It provided more experiences and uniqueness to her character as a performer.
I appreciate the great lengths she had done as an exceptional artist. She may have not written her music, but she was able to excel in the industry by providing character and individuality.

Hi Char! I love Rihanna's music and had no idea that "Pon de Replay" was her first song. I also had no idea that she had such a rough childhood, which makes her career even more inspiring. It was interesting learning about her relationship with Jay-Z because I honestly had no idea that he wrote a lot of the songs she sang. I loved the two songs you compared because they really showcase her versatility as a singer. This blog was so informative, and the only thing I would add is your opinion about the songs. Do you like one better than the other, or do you dislike one? Great blog!
ReplyDeleteThis was very well done. I'm aware of Rihanna but had no idea of the wealth of her story... my knowledge went no farther than "umbrella" if I'm being honest. I grew up on 90's hip-hop and rap and had absolutely no clue that Jay-Z wrote a lot of her songs... I suppose for me, that's a little more of a testament to him, but still, that's fascinating! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis post was very good and well-written! I liked how you talked about Rihanna's life, from her tough origins in Barbados to her climb to prominence as one of the most powerful and successful musicians in the world. You did a great job of showing how she can do a variety of things, like act, compose music, and run a business. I particularly liked how you related the music in "Pon de Replay" to the music in "Umbrella." It really showed how flexible she is as a singer, able to sing both cheerful dancing numbers and sorrowful ballads. I think Rihanna doesn't write all of her songs, but she puts her unique spin on each one with her powerful voice and emotive delivery. Even though she hasn't recorded any music in a long time, her Super Bowl performance revealed how powerful she still is. Your post really made it clear why Rihanna is one of the most important musicians of our time.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your take on Rihanna’s versatility and authenticity. Her deep, raspy voice and emotional power make her stand out. I also love how she uses her performances much like the Super Bowl Halftime Show, to tell stories through fashion, color, and movement. The bold outfits and confident energy perfectly showcase her strength as a performer. My favorite song by her is “Breakin’ Dishes.”
